About Jeff

Jeff was an academic researcher for >10 years in Cambridge, UK, at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, Europe’s premier genomics research center. He was a group leader, then founding Director of Open Targets (a pre-competitive partnership between Sanger, EMBL-EBI, and 8 pharma companies), and then Director of Sanger’s SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Initiative. He moved to industry full-time in 2018 as Chief Scientific Officer and Board Member at Genomics Plc, and then in 2021 as Chief Scientific Officer at Nightingale Health, a Finnish biotech company.
Across these diverse roles he: generated foundational genomic datasets, developed new statistical and machine learning methods, authored world-class publications , managed organizations of 50+ people, raised tens of millions of euros in funding from charities, government, pharma and venture capital, and led the development of a validated multiomic disease risk prediction tool in nationwide clinical use in Finland. He is an elected Fellow of the UK’s Academy of Medical Sciences.
Services
Data analysis and software for population genomics
Population-scale genomics datasets are transforming medical research. We apply statistical and machine learning methods to turn these data into interpretable results. We write clean, documented code and deliver outputs that are reproducible and publication-ready.
Building teams and organisations
Building an effective team is the foundation of any genomics organisation, and the way technical teams do their best work is changing rapidly. We have built and led teams of 50+ people across academic and industry settings, and can help you grow for success.
Strategic advice on national initiatives and research programmes
Large genomics programmes — national biobanks, population health studies, public-private consortia — require more than good science. They need clear priorities, aligned stakeholders, and realistic plans. We have been inside several of the efforts that have shaped how the field operates today. We draw on that deep expertise to advise on how to design and deliver genomics initiatives that have lasting impact.
